Barnsley born artist Jan Hopkins graduated from Newcastle polytechnic in 1989. She now lives and works in Sheffield. Much of her work takes the form of artist’s books which suit her her broadly narrative, sequential or thematic approach.She is fascinated by memory and how something so fallible plays such an important role in shaping our identity. Her work revisits and revises the past to create obscurely autobiographical books, drawings and artefacts.Errant Memoir- An Unsentimental Journey Through Cornwall is her latest artist’s book, exploring a part remembered journey she made along the Cornish coastline in the summer of 1995. It’s named after a travel journal written by Mrs Craik in 1884 which acted as an aide-memoir and a guide, evoking and provoking the landscape of the past. Errant Memoir describes a reflective journey that plays with the mixing of memories and associations of time and place, combining facts, invention, myth and deeply personal experiences into one amorphous narrative.
